COMPARISON: HAM V RUS - ITALIAN GP

 Yesterday the British with the number 63 got a better performance than his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, let’s see why:

Here is the telemetry between the two drivers of the Mercedes, we start from the first sector where Hamilton loses 0.2: Lewis starts to slow down first but brakes after his compatriot, Russell scales the gears in a more progressive way than his teammate, that with decisive manner passes from the eighth to the second gear.

Russell manages to bring a little more speed in the input than Hamilton, and also manages to make a more decisive restart than n°44, George is also the first to move from second to third gear, a possible signal that has managed to optimize the output better than the 7-time world champion.

The distance then remains constant for all the following straight where they arrive at the Roggia with a value of similar km/h: Hamilton 323 km/h, Russell 322 km/h.

In the second sector, Hamilton manages to reduce the gap from his teammate, we can see that Lewis prefers to slow down and sometimes brake earlier (especially in Lesmo 2) to get better traction on the exit.

For example, at the exit of the Roggia, Hamilton prefers to keep high rpm and he succeeds very well in his intention because from the gap of 0.2 he came below 0.1s.

He loses all the little advantage he managed to create in T2 at turn 11: this time Hamilton has not been able to optimize the exit, in fact Russell slows and brakes much earlier than his teammate, and also for longer. This allows him to have a good traction in the exit and in fact we see how much more time it takes Hamilton to change gear compared to Russell.

ANALYSIS TURN 11:

Although Hamilton seems to have a greater constancy per km/h higher in turn 11 than his team-mate, during the qualifying session, from the graph representing the telemetry of speed, Hamilton appears to enter with more speed, But just shortly after entering the parabolic, the speed drops a lot compared to his teammate.

Hamilton complained several times in the qualifying session about understeer, lack of grip and vibrations (at this point I suppose the front-end). Looking at the telemetry, Hamilton at that point goes from eighth to sixth (much earlier than his teammate). It may be that Hamilton suffered from understeer, or lack of grip in general, during the entry phase.

Unfortunately I don’t have the on-board so I couldn’t confirm my theory, but observing the violin plot in the upper left, it is Hamilton to have a constancy at km/h higher than Russell.

This could be explained because Hamilton mounts a front wing more charged than his compatriot, which instead has a specification that tends to reduce the load in the central part of the wing

But this also explains that the balance of the car n°44 is not optimal, because it has a front wing more charged than the companion and suffered anyway of understeering in the fastest lap. We will see in the race how the situation will be and if they have brought changes to the flaps to try to reduce the understeering.
