QUALIFICATION ANALYSIS - AZERBAIJAN GP

Qualifying is over: Leclerc for the fourth time in a row is the poleman of Baku, after 0.3s there is Piastri and 0.4 from Charles there is his teammate, Carlos Sainz.

QUALIFICATION ANALYSIS: LEC V PIA

We start immediately with the first sector, this time we do not see a big difference on how it is approached the sector 1.

On the contrary, this time it is Leclerc who brakes first and for longer than Piastri. But while Oscar is fully throttling, the mongegasco no, sharing amche first and also has a better traction, although it did not go to III gear, but remaining on the IV then going to V first.

At the apex of turn 1, Leclerc is 5 km/h faster than the McLaren driver.

We go ahead and always notice how Leclerc does not tend to raise the throttle at all in the curve, always keeping the rpm a little more different than Piastri.

In turn 3 we see how, compared to Oscar, Charles in this case does not optimize the speed of entry, but favors the exit phase, bringing more speed to the mini-straight that leads to turn 4.

This does not give him an immediate advantage, but he repeats the same thing in turn 4, gaining in the straight leading to chicane of turns 5 and 6.

And here ends the first sector.

Also in this case, compared to the #4 of McLaren, #16 of Ferrari has a higher exit speed, sacrificing that in cornerning in the chicane, reaching turn 7 with a speed of 259 km/ h, while Piastri 253.

The sequence of curves T8-T12, the narrowest part of the circuit, is now coming. In this case Charles prefers to sacrifice the T8-T11 section, to optimize the exit speed of turn 12 (even if he uses a little brake, while Piastri does not).

At the turn 12, Leclerc has a speed of 184 km/h, while Piastri 172 km/h. Up to turn 15, the Mongeasco wins on the Australian driver almost 0.4s.

Also in turn 15 the driver of the Ferrari tends to brake slightly earlier, releasing the throttle a little less directamentrespect to Oscar, as in other turns does not release the accelerator at all, recovering in the stretch that leads to turn 16 another 0.040 s.

This is where the second sector ends and the third begins.

Also in this curve, Leclerc favors the exit speed, which has proved very important in this area, since immediately after there is a straight of 2.2 km!

Leclerc also here is not untrue and keeps his foot on the throttle, remains on the IV gear (as in qualifying), but in this case compared to Oscar has a better traction (which meanwhile the Australian driver, touched with the rear right the wall at turn 15.

When Piastri is at 100% of the throttle, the difference in speed in the exit phase is: 224 km/h Leclerc, 210 km/h Oscar. Finishing on the finish line at a speed of 338 km/h Leclerc and 336 Piastri, with a gap of 0.330s.

ANALYSIS OF THE FIRST FASTEST SECTORS:

Using the excellent multiviewer platform, let’s see the time ranking in certain sectors:

We start observing it like this, then we go into detail with the telemetry. What do we notice? A very strong Ferrari in the first sector, true Perez is the first, but Verstappen is 4° with a gap of almost 0,2s from Leclerc, so to my opinion in the first sector: 1st Ferrari; 2st RedBull; 3rd McLaren/Mercedes.

Let’s go to the second sector, Leclerc has done a wonderful sector here, usually lost enough during the tests and Sainz is the demonstration that the Ferrari does not go very fast in the second sector, so really good Charles. Overall I would say that the fastest here is the Red Bull, even in free practice has shown that it does very well here, 2nd Ferrari/ McLaren, 3rd Mercedes.

The fastest in the third sector was the Aston Martin with Alonso, but at the moment I focus on the top teams (sorry AM/Alonso fans). In this area the Mercedes is very fast, we also saw it together in FP3, on how Russell managed to take the first position in this stretch. Here, instead, the Ferrari loses a lot. So: 1st Mercedes, 2nd McLaren, 3rd Red Bull, 4th Ferrari.

Let me know if you agree with me! Now we move on to telemetry:

SECTOR 1: PEREZ V LECLERC

In previous articles we have already compared these two drivers, and we remember how Perez slowed down a lot during the entry phase while at the exit phase he was much faster than Leclerc.

In qualifying this does not happen, but they have a very similar behavior, except that in turn 1 Leclerc releases the accelerator (although not completely) with more decision, while Perez is more progressive. Charles as in the tests faces turn 1 IV gear.

While it is remarkable as in the entry of turn 3 slows down a lot, raises the foot from the throttle (always not at all) and brakes progressively, bringing less speed in entry, but greater in exit. This doesn’t pay off just on the spot, because in turn 4, even if he brakes first, Perez releases the accelerator earlier, bringing slightly less speed into the entry, but that allows him to have a slight advantage on the stretch leading to the chicane and the stretch where T1 ends.

Sector 2 would be a comparison between Leclerc and Piastri, but we already dealt with it at the beginning, so let’s go directly to the third comparing Russel and Leclerc.

SECTOR 3: RUSSELL V LECLERC

Unlike free practice Russell takes the curve in IV gear like Leclerc, but this does not allow him to have an excellent traction in the exit, or better not as in the practice, but also observing that he passes to higher gears before Leclerc, It indicates that it has a slight traction advantage.

Maybe for the trail or not, unfortunately I do not have the opportunity to see the on-board, for the rest of the straight Russell has a higher speed than the monegasque, cut the finisch line with a speed of 341 km/h while Leclerc with 338 km/h.
