T1 ANALYSIS - UNITED STATES GP

Qualifying for the sprint race grid ended with a pole by Verstappen, followed by Russell’s Mercedes and then Leclerc’s Ferrari, while Norris finished only in fourth place.

This is a very important Grand Prix, both for the world ranking, but also because it was the stage of many updates brought by teams, especially McLaren and Mercedes (among the top teams).

So it will be very important to observe the behavior of the car and its performance. Let’s look at it together.

TELEMETRY IN T1:

Let’s start by saying that the performance of Ferrari are to be reviewed in qualifying, because Leclerc in the fast curves that characterize the first sector has lost control of the car, losing a lot of speed, as you can see from the telemetry.

So let’s go to observe the other drivers: we note that Max Verstappen with his RB20 manages to bring greater speed in the entrance of the T6, but he is forced to brake in the entry phase, but then maintain a higher speed both in the travel phase and in the exit.

To see how Russell (actually also Leclerc) manages to tackle turn 6 with his foot on the accelerator and not raise it completely unlike Norris and Verstappen. Only Russell has a similar behavior in the following curve, even if Lando manages to bring more speed in entry because unlike the others he does not brake in the entry phase, and actually slows down after compared to Verstappen.

COMPARISON OF TOP SPEED AND MINIMUM SPEED IN T6:

From this graph it is easier to observe the situation: as said the value of the Ferrari was a little distorted by that event at the end of session. However, in the SQ it recorded the worst speed in turn 6, but 4 km/h later we find McLaren with a top speed of 325 km/h, slower than Ferrari by 4km/h and 5 km/h compared to Mercedes.

Russell’s Mercedes which seems to have the best compromise: high speed in straight and 237 km/h as min. speed in T6, up of 7 km/h compared to McL38 and down of only 3 km/h compared to Red Bull of Verstappen.

It seems that the upgrades brought by Mercedes and Red Bull have worked very well from the beginning (except for Mercedes at the start of FP1), while McLaren seemed to me very low. But it’s still early to make conclusions, have a good race weekend!
